The Silent Struggle of Survival
"I wanted to stay in school," she whispers, "but they said this is my destiny." A young Maasai girl stands with a group of women, marking the day she leaves her village to begin life with her husband. Like many others in her community, she was forced into marriage and underwent female genital mutilation (FGM), a deeply harmful practice with devastating health and psychological consequences. FGM can lead to severe bleeding, infection, infertility, complications during childbirth, and even death. Beyond the physical risks, survivors often endure lasting psychological trauma. Despite its prevalence in some communities due to cultural and religious traditions, the practice is widely recognized as a human rights violation, rooted in gender inequality and discrimination against women.
