Maasai youth practicing traditional jumping rituals in preparation for a secret female rite of passage ceremony in their village. The ceremony is held discreetly due to laws prohibiting female genital mutilation (FGM), highlighting the ongoing tension between cultural practices and legal frameworks aimed at safeguarding human rights. “We are taught to honor our traditions,” says one of the young men. “This is our way of life, and we believe it is essential for the girls to become women in the eyes of our community. But we know the laws are changing, and it’s confusing for us.”
