A Maasai girl looks out into the distance, caught between the world she knows and the uncertain future that awaits. Despite Kenya's 2011 federal law against female genital mutilation (FGM), the practice continues in remote communities. 'If I do not accept the "cut," I will be forced to leave,' says the girl, her voice tinged with fear. 'Where can I go? Girls are cast out from their communities if they’re not "cut." Many girls like me undergo the process because of familial and community pressure. If we reject the tradition, the cost is high.
